Formula And Preparation Of Butyl Latex

May 14, 2023

Butyl latex is a latex formed by dissolving butyl synthetic rubber in a solvent and in the presence of an emulsifier. Butyl latex film has excellent heat resistance, weather resistance, ozone aging resistance and chemical resistance, and has good air tightness. It is widely used in tire cord impregnation, adhesives, anti-virus gloves, etc.

Formula

Butyl rubber pulp (15%) 40kg

Potassium hydroxide (10% solution) 0.9kg

Potassium dihydrogen phosphate (6%) 0.9kg

Polyvinyl alcohol 9kg

Potassium soap 0.12kg

Oleic acid 0.18kg

Soft water 10.9L

Preparation Method

Dissolve potassium soap in soft water, then mix all the slurry (liquid material) evenly to obtain butyl latex. The latex is distilled at about 100°C to remove the organic solvent (in the original butyl rubber slurry), and the solvent is recovered by cooling (the purpose of removing the solvent is to make the emulsifier fully stabilize the particles). Generally, the total solid content of steamed butyl latex is about 10%, which cannot meet the process requirement of 50% total solid content in production. Therefore, it must be further creamed and concentrated. Put the distilled (about 10%) butyl latex into the creaming tank, add 10% KOH to adjust the pH value to 12 hours, then add 2% ammonium alginate, let it rest for 24 hours, remove the clear liquid, and get concentrated of butyl latex.

Instructions

Used in the preparation of tire cord impregnated vulcanized latex, adhesive or anti-gas gloves vulcanized latex. The use is similar to natural rubber latex, and the dosage depends on the formula.
